About
Along a lonely stretch of River Road, a marker stands as a grim reminder of the partial meltdown of TMI Unit 2 in the early morning on March 28, 1979.
Looking across the Susquehanna River, the cooling towers on the right are part of Unit 2 where the most serious accident to ever occur at a U.S. nuclear power plant occurred.
Fortunately, the incident was not determined to have caused any serious health concerns, in spite of the release of radioactive gases into the environment.

Cleanup of the incident took over 14 years and cost roughly $1 billion. Unit 2 was shut down following the accident. Unit 1 was shut down in September 2019. The plant is currently owned by Exelon Corporation. It is retired, but still clearly visible from River Road.
